The Courthouse Challenge 5K took place on a rainy Saturday morning in Morganton, with nearly 100 runners braving the less-than-ideal weather to come out in support of Burke County Sheriff's Deputy Martin Lawing, who was critically wounded in the line of duty this past December.

Lawing, an avid runner and competitive cyclist, is currently an inpatient at Atlanta’s Shepherd Center, a facility that specializes in the treatment of spinal cord injuries.

Finishing first was track coach Matt Reep, who was just back from serving a tour of duty in Iraq. The first overall female winner was Grace Ridley of Conover.

We also wish to thank Burke County Sheriff John McDevitt for his kind words of support before the start, Walter Pharr for leading a brief prayer, all of the volunteers, and last, but certainly not least, Race Director Amy Lane for a job very well done. The event raised nearly $2,000 for Deputy Lawing and his family.
